Scholarship Essay Most other courses spend hours on stuff thatâs not even on the test! StudyProf GRE Prep was designed by analyzing official released GRE tests AND by regularly polling students right after they take the GRE to learn of any new content. In February 1960, four black college students sat down at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and asked to be served. They were refused service, and they refused to leave their seats. Within days, more than 50 students had volunteered to continue the sit-in, and within weeks the movement had spread to other college campuses. So how to go about the task of reading literature well, and reading critically? This course will focus on key introductory methods and critical approaches, and is intended to develop your skills in reading, writing about, discussing and interpreting literary texts. In the last weeks of the course, we will read longer texts, including at least one play and one novel. Students will also write in a variety of non-fiction modes--explainers, profiles, essays, memoirs. Ultimately, we will use the study of metafiction to focus a larger inquiry into the socializing force of self-consciousness in human development. Note that students will be required to use, as well as interpret, metafictional techniques in their assigned writing. We will examine linked stories as a form organizing narratives that can stand alone, but that resonate powerfully with one another, sharing themes, settings, and sometimes even characters. While letters of recommendation are not required, they give us additional information about your accomplishments. We will spend most of our class time actively engaged in a variety of techniques to improve your critical reasoning and analytical skills, both written and oral. Though the skills you learn will be applicable to other disciplines, this is also a literature class, designed as well to prepare you for upper level courses in the English Department. poetry, jazz and other musical forms, folk humor, and African mythology have all been seen as essential sources for black poetry. We will ask how black poetry has been defined and whether there is a single black poetic tradition or several. historical and personal circumstances of a work's composition, as well as deriving from the particular words of a text and from the mutable life of language itself. The leadership scholarship is offered to six students who have shown outstanding leadership in their high school careers and who plan to continue to develop those skills at DeSales. Unlike most GRE prep courses, this course only covers exactly whatâs on the test.
